Ok. I have bored all with my refusal to get into the whole e-book thing on a couple of different occasions. I was feeling pretty smug about the whole thing, too, clinging to my beloved paper-and-ink books with the shiny covers. And then sometime in the last couple of days I started to notice something that rocked the boat a bit – a few series that I follow faithfully are releasing new stories that will be available ONLY in e-format. Huh. That sucks.
Coming up on December 5th is A Taste of Midnight from Lara Adrian‘s Midnight Breeds series.
A shimmering holiday gala lights up an ancient castle in the Scottish Highlands, but beautiful widowed Breedmate Danika MacConn feels alone in the crowd. Even among the friends and festivity of the Darkhaven celebration, she can’t forget her lost love, a fallen warrior of the Order. Her brief return to her mate’s homeland has become treacherous after rejecting the advances of a dangerous Edinburgh crime boss with a taste for blood sport. As Danika seeks to expose the vampire and his dark trade, she discovers an unexpected ally in his forbidding, enigmatic henchman, Brannoc, a man who exudes heat, danger, and dark menace—and seems somehow achingly familiar. Bran has his own reasons for wanting to keep Dani out of his employer’s business . . . and his own secrets he means to keep buried. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a woman who tempts the wildest part of his Breed nature—especially when that woman is Danika MacConn, the one woman capable of bringing him to his knees.
Now, for this next one, you have to head over to Samhain Publishing. It will be releasing an Elder Races story from Thea Harrison on December 13th, called True Colors.
Meeting your soulmate? Great. Preventing your possible murder? Even better.
Alice Clark, a Wyr and schoolteacher, has had two friends murdered in as many days, and she’s just found the body of a third. She arrives at the scene only minutes before Gideon Riehl, a wolf Wyr and current detective in the Wyr Division of Violent Crime—and, as Alice oh-so-inconveniently recognizes at first sight, her mate. But the sudden connection Riehl and Alice feel is complicated when the murders are linked to a serial killer who last struck seven years ago, killing seven people in seven days. They have just one night before the killer strikes again. And every sign points to Alice as the next victim.
Shannon K. Butcher will be releasing an e-book from her Sentinal Wars series early next year called Bound By Vengeance. There is a pretty nifty cover, but no other info available as yet.

Now, this next one confuses me. Alyssa Day is supposed to be releasing a Warriors of Poseidon story in December – but there is no trace of a link as to where you can download Alejandro’s Sorceress. And there is no info, cover blurb, nada. Just a cover. Strange. And it is due out in a couple of weeks…
Now, that is not to say that I am against the e-books – I’m not. Authors like Kresley Cole, Ilona Andrews and Jeaniene Frost are all going back and re-releasing their novellas in e-format, and I think it is great. I would just like there to be a print option for us paper-lovers. I don’t even mind buying an anthology just for one story – I do it all the time. A while back, I read an interview with Christine Feehan somewhere where she talked about how print runs for romance books are down since people are buying more e-format stories, but that not printing books is forcing people to go in an electronic direction. It seems like a catch 22, and still leaves me wondering if I just might have to take the plunge one day, after all…

I’m a physical book reader myself, so this is going to be difficult for me to read all these new enovellas coming out, but I don’t want to miss out on any of the series! I’ll have to read them on my iPod touch because it’s too hard to sit at my computer for long periods of time
I wasn’t sure if I would like an e-reader so last February I bought Amazon’s cheapest kindle and now you couldn’t tear it from my cold dead hands
…..except to trade it off with my table with the kindle app.
I’ve read over 100 books this year, a few of which were book, books that aren’t out in electronic format yet and there fine but if I have my choice it’s electronic every time, especially since now I can check ebooks out of our local library.
I’m no longer tripping over books on every available surface and the kindle fits neatly in my purse and doesn’t get banged up while it’s there.
If you decide to take the plunge start out cheap just in case isn’t not you thing but you might be surprised like I was.
Love your sight. Just found it last week and think it’s great.
Thanks Robin! Glad you found your way over here. You know, I am surprised that I didn’t jump on the whole e-reader thing since I do love my tech stuff, but I can’t seem to get away from the physical book. Thanks for the idea about starting out with a cheaper one, though, since I usually go for the pricier stuff and then up forcing myself to use it because I spent so much on it. It is a good idea. I figure if my favorite authors start doing the e-stuff more frequently, I am going to have to bite the bullet and buy one.
It really is a nuisance. I will have to do the computer thing – bleck – but like you I don’t want to miss anything. Looks like we are stuck.
This grips the h**l out of me too! (About authors releasing only an ebooks when it’s part of a series.) I’m also a PRINT kind of gal! (I guess I’ll have to try to get the pdf format and then print it out.)
I found out some info for you though about ‘Alejandro’s Sorceress’ by Alyssa Day at the blogsite below:
http://www.books-n-kisses.com/2011/10/interview-giveaway-with-alyssa-day.html?zx=8c06bbc1997fcc09
Alejandro is a secondary character from Lord Justice’s book, ‘Atlantis Unleashed’. It’s a stand-alone novella. There’s info about the story there.
Lea Ellen {night owl in IL}
Thanks, Lea Ellen.
Even if there was a hint of them coming in print anthologies sometime in the future, I would be happy. I never thought about printing them out myself, actually. That sounds interesting… Thanks for the Alejandro’s Sorceress stuff – I have been looking for a while, but couldn’t come up with anything.
Just found this info too:
http://www.alyssaday.com/home.html
She says the heroine’s name is Maria and the ebook will be out in Dec. 2011.
Wow, great finds! I love all these authors!! Thanks for sharing, now I need to up day my lists. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
Thanks, Alix. There were a few more I found, but they didn’t have covers or anything yet, so I will post them as I go along.
I really hate the idea that books will not be released in BOTH formats; forcing people to buy electronic books when the business changes so quickly that readers will problably be defunct before some come out!! I like holding a book in my hands; not electronics. What happens if something should happen to the satelittes? no paper records could be devastation of epic proportions as cell phones, computers, etc fail.
And to walk into a bookstore and not have the scent of books greet you but cold metal/plastic coated electronics >>>???? Nah…
Yep, that is my problem, too. I get excited for a book – cover, flipping through the pages. Hell, I even like organizing them. While the book OCD keeps me in reading the paper books, it also demands I not miss a part of one of my series. It doesn’t really work that well…
I don’t know if this helps or not, but a little over a year ago I was a firm advocate for paperback books, no way was I going to the “e-book” zone. Then…my daughter bought me the first gen Nook and a month later I was a total traitor to paperbacks….
Ebooks do open a whole new world of reading, so many authors I would not have read because they only publish in ebook.
A quote from my daughter’s favorite T-shirt – “Come to the Darkside…we have cookies”
You may have posted this one before, but JK Beck has a novella ebook out for her series as well…
Thanks for the info K!
You know, quite a few people have said the same thing, that they were totally surprised by how much they loved their e-readers once they got their hands on one. Do you still buy paper books at all, or have you made the complete switch over to electronic? I am trying to talk myself into it by saying that I could do both – use the e-reader for just the things I can’t get in paper, and keep buying the books wherever possible.
You are right, though, there seems to be quite a few that only publish electronically, and authors like Ilona Andrews and Cynthia Eden have whole series that are not released in paper format, too. Decisions, decisions.
I do still buy books, but only my favs, like Kresley Cole, JR Ward, Larissa Ione and a few others. (Only because I like having the whole series to look at on my book shelf.) But it’s getting harder to read the books. I’m reading Larissa Ione right now and it’s much slower going than digital. It might be that age thing…I like that I can change the font size.
One thing that makes it worth it is the free books you can get and the discounted prices (on certain publishers).
Yep, have to have the favs on the shelves. I do imagine that the digital format would be easier for my character guides, too. Damn, I really am talking myself into this.
I bought the first five of Gena Sholwalter’s Atlantis series for 8.85 bundled and the first three in her Lords of underworld series for 8.38 in bundled in ebook form. That said mostly I pay what a paperback costs and there isn’t any printing involved so it’s not like I get a better deal very often.
I was actually surprised by the pricing on some of them, now that you mention it. It would seem that the digital format titles would be cheaper due to less cost, if I am not mistaken.
I’ve a book and ebook lover.
Thanks for this compilation!
No problem, Lea. I will keep my eye out to see if there are any other biggies coming soon.
You would think. Even the hard back prices are usually the same for digital. The only time I pay those prices is when Ward gives us more of the brothers. They are the only ones I pay hardback prices for.
I think you’ll find that you like the ereader. The one thing I’ve found is that I can buy even more books and they don’t take up as much room. Also, I don’t have that whole “now that I’ve bought this, where do I put it” problem. *grin*
I didn’t think I would like the ereader at first, but all it took was realizing that I wouldn’t lose my place because my toddler stole my bookmark or I had to set it down to run after said toddler (and thus having it close) and losing my place or the fact that it fit oh so nicely inside the diaper bag for me to quickly become a fan of it. Or even better, the ability to finish a book while at the dealership, waiting on that oil change, and being able to quickly get a new book. Yeah it may not have the smell of print, but the conveniences make up for it.
Even though I have the ereader, I still purchase the print novels, but only a select few. I only buy the ones I know I’ll love and get the ones I may only read once or twice as ebooks. This way, the ones on my shelves, that i get to look at all the time, are ones I know I have enjoyed.
Well, I can’t say that any more. That’s what I was doing. However, I’ve gotten so many books over time that I’m starting to feel really intimadating by the number I’ve bought and haven’t read yet that I’m getting rid of all my print. It’s so much easier to read on my ereader that I find I don’t want to read print any more. Plus, I’ll read a story once and there are so many other books out there to read, I don’t know when I’ll ever read it again. So it simply sits on my shelves gathering dust. With the ereader, all my books are digital so all I have to worry about is how much space is on my harddrive. Plus, there’s not that hovering stack of books in a TBR pile that demand to be read.
The one thing about all the enovellas being released – a lot of authors are putting them out there for free. I can’t count the number of new authors I’ve tried simply because their novellas were available for free and they were so easy to get.
Hey Jackie.
It does sound like your e-reader worked out to be a great fit for you – and as a bonus, no more of those sometimes embarassing covers to deal with in public. I don’t know why I keep going back and forth on this…it isn’t like the suckers are so expensive that I can’t afford one. And it isn’t like I must give up the paper books – it would just give me access to more and different writers, like you said.
You are brave to dump the print books, though. Not sure I would be able to part with them. I agree with you that the unread books can really, really make you feel overwhelmed, too. Thanks for the info, more to think about.
My husband wanted to buy me a e-reader and I kept telling him I wanted my paper books. Then I was diagnosed with a medical condition that made it difficult to hold a book and also affected my eyes so somedays I could read fine and other days I would get terrible headaches after a chapter or two. When he hadn’t seen me reading for a few weeks he decided to surprise me with a kindle. At first I really didn’t even want to try it, but after the first couple of books I was ready to sell all of my paper books. Even when I’m not having a flare-up and feeling fine I don’t touch the paper books. It’s soo much easier to use the e-reader.Its easy to take with you everywhere, and since I back up all of my books (in two different places) I don’t have to worry that I’ll lose a book or one of my kids will throw it in the toilet to see if it will float. And if I lose my kindle or decide to upgrade all I would have to do to get my books would be to just redownload them on my new device.
The only problem is now he gets mad at me when I won’t let him borrow it.
Sounds like a great husband. I am sorry to hear that you have that medical issues, too – must have been more than frightening. Looks like the e-reader turned out to be a good fit for you if you would be able to dump the paper books. It definitely sounds easy to use and organize, too. Thanks Dawn.
