New Series Alerts…

Yep, it is that time again. Time to see what new series are heading our way this coming week (and tempting my book-buying guidelines). There are six newbies to highlight, with a little bit of something for everyone. Let’s start with Midnight Crossroads, which is the first book in the Midnight, Texas series from Charlaine Harris. I know that the ending of the Sookie Stackhouse series angered a lot of fans, and I heard a few say that they would never read anything from Harris again. I wonder how that will affect this new series?

midnight crossroad_front mech2.inddSynopsis…

From Charlaine Harris, the bestselling author who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, comes a darker locale—populated by more strangers than friends. But then, that’s how the locals prefer it….

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

And for the ghost story lover, we have Seanan McGuire‘s Sparrow Hill Road, which is the first book of her Ghost Stories series.

sparrow hill roadSynopsis…

Rose Marshall died in 1952 in Buckley Township, Michigan, run off the road by a man named Bobby Cross—a man who had sold his soul to live forever, and intended to use her death to pay the price of his immortality. Trouble was, he didn’t ask Rose what she thought of the idea.

It’s been more than sixty years since that night, and she’s still sixteen, and she’s still running.

They have names for her all over the country: the Girl in the Diner. The Phantom Prom Date. The Girl in the Green Silk Gown. Mostly she just goes by “Rose,” a hitchhiking ghost girl with her thumb out and her eyes fixed on the horizon, trying to outrace a man who never sleeps, never stops, and never gives up on the idea of claiming what’s his. She’s the angel of the overpass, she’s the darling of the truck stops, and she’s going to figure out a way to win her freedom. After all, it’s not like it can kill her.

You can’t kill what’s already dead.

And for those with a love for military action/paranormal romance books, there is Paige Tyler‘s Her Perfect Mate. It is the first book of the X-Ops series.

her perfect mateSynopsis…

When Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan is picked for an assignment with the Department of Covert Affairs, he’s stunned to find his new partner is a beautiful woman who looks like she couldn’t hurt a fly, much less take down a terrorist.

Ivy Halliwell isn’t your average covert op. Her feline DNA means she can literally bring out the claws when things get dicey. She isn’t thrilled to be paired with yet another military grunt, but Landon is different. He doesn’t think she’s a freak and he’s smokin’ hot.

Soon they find themselves facing a threat even greater than anyone imagines…and an animal magnetism impossible to ignore.

Now onto the Young Adult releases. Jennifer Donnelly starts her new Waterfire saga with this week’s release of Deep Blue.

deep blueSynopsis…

Deep in the ocean, in a world not so different from our own, live the merpeople. Their communities are spread throughout the oceans, seas, and freshwaters all over the globe.

When Serafina, a mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea, awakens on the morning of her betrothal, her biggest worry should be winning the love of handsome Prince Mahdi. And yet Sera finds herself haunted by strange dreams that foretell the return of an ancient evil. Her dark premonitions are confirmed when an assassin’s arrow poisons Sera’s mother. Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin’s master and prevent a war between the Mer nations. Led only by her shadowy dreams, Sera searches for five other mermaid heroines who are scattered across the six seas. Together, they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood and uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world’s very existence.

There has been a lot of buzz lately about this next one, which is The Falconer by Elizabeth May. It is the first book of The Falconer series.

the falconerSynopsis…

Lady Aileana Kameron, the only daughter of the Marquess of Douglas, was destined for a life carefully planned around Edinburgh’s social events – right up until a faery killed her mother.

Now it’s the 1844 winter season and Aileana slaughters faeries in secret, in between the endless round of parties, tea and balls. Armed with modified percussion pistols and explosives, she sheds her aristocratic facade every night to go hunting. She’s determined to track down the faery who murdered her mother, and to destroy any who prey on humans in the city’s many dark alleyways.

But the balance between high society and her private war is a delicate one, and as the fae infiltrate the ballroom and Aileana’s father returns home, she has decisions to make. How much is she willing to lose – and just how far will Aileana go for revenge?

And finally, we have Amy Plum‘s After the End, which is the first book in the After the End series.

after the endSynopsis…

World War III has left the world ravaged by nuclear radiation. A lucky few escaped to the Alaskan wilderness. They’ve survived for the last thirty years by living off the land, being one with nature, and hiding from whoever else might still be out there.

At least, this is what Juneau has been told her entire life.

When Juneau returns from a hunting trip to discover that everyone in her clan has vanished, she sets off to find them. Leaving the boundaries of their land for the very first time, she learns something horrifying: There never was a war. Cities were never destroyed. The world is intact. Everything was a lie.

Now Juneau is adrift in a modern-day world she never knew existed. But while she’s trying to find a way to rescue her friends and family, someone else is looking for her. Someone who knows the extraordinary truth about the secrets of her past.

That is a wrap-up for today. Any of these on your must-read list? What early buzz have you heard about this week’s new series?

Cover Lover – 9 New Titles

Usually, when I do a cover lover post, I hope to find at least one that is a stand-out. I didn’t have much luck this time around. There isn’t anything that makes me gag, but then there isn’t much that would make me grab the book off of the shelf to read, either.

First up, we have the second book from the new Chris Marie Green Jensen Murphy, Ghost for Hire series. Another One Bites the Dust will be released on November 4th.

the young elitesWhat do you think? I think that both Talon and The Young Elites are pretty, but they gave me more of a novella cover vibe rather than the first books of much anticipated new series from two successful authors.

This and That…

There has been a bit of info coming out on some upcoming releases lately, so I thought I would do a little post showing some of the tidbits going around…

Anything interesting? Which ones are you most excited for?

Random Stuff and Cover Lover

Well, sometimes timing just works out perfectly. Last night I finished up the quick little character guide for the first book of The Innkeeper Chronicles, and today the first chapter of book two was upped on Ilona Andrews‘ site. This one is called Sweep in Peace, and as before, there will be a chapter upped roughly every week with hopefully another print version to follow at the end.

Also, for those who are impatiently awaiting the next Guild Hunter book Archangel’s Shadows, Nalini Singh upped a small excerpt featuring Janvier and Ashwini. Since this is of course one of my most anticipated releases for this year, I was pretty happy to see a little something to tide me over.

On the cover side of things, there are five new ones for today. This first one is the cover for the upcoming Sookie Stackhouse anthology featuring short stories from authors like Seanan McGuire, Rachel Caine and MaryJanice Davidson. Dead But Not Forgotten is due out on November 25th.

dead but not forgottenCover #2 comes from Lexi Blake‘s Thieves series. Steal the Night is due out on June 3rd in e-format, with a print version to follow at a later date.

steal the nightThere are three young adult titles, too. Collide is the long delayed third book from Melissa West‘s The Taking series, and it is now set for a December 2nd release.

collideI must admit, I am digging this next cover. The Girl Who Never Was, from author Skylar Dorset, will be out on June 1st.

the girl who never wasAnd finally, Josephine Angelini starts up her new Worldwalker Trilogy on September 2nd with the release of the first book, Trial by Fire.

This and That…

Just some random info and new release dates from out and about…

  • Shelly Laurenston will be going back to her Hunting Season world, in a manner of speaking, with a new three-book series. The new Crows book will be set in Los Angeles, with new characters and a new storyline.
  • Robin D. Owens will release her 13th Celta’s Heartmates book, Heart Fire, on November 4th.
  • It looks like the Queen Betsy series from MaryJanice Davidson just keeps chugging along. Undead & Unwary will be out on October 7th.
  • Looking for more Sookie? Dead But Not Forgotten is a collection of stories set in Bon Temps, written by authors such as Seanan McGuire, Rachel Caine, and MaryJanice Davidson. It will be out on October 7th.
  • The second book from Samantha Shannon‘s The Bone Season book, The Mime Order, will be out on October 21st.
  • Alexandra Adornetto starts up her new Ghost House Saga on August 26th with the release of Ghost House.
  • I didn’t even know the first book was part of a series, but Erin Quinn‘s second Beyond book, The Three Fates of Ryan Love, will be out on September 30th.
  • Fans of Kresley Cole‘s Arcana Chronicles series will have a little extra wait for the third book, Dead of Winter. It has been pushed back to January 6th.
  • October 7th is the release date for the next Jane Yellowrock book from Faith Hunter, and it will be called Broken Soul.
  • It is a bit of a wait for Suzanne Johnson‘s next Sentinels of New Orleans book, Pirates Alley. It is due out next April.
  • Sherrilyn Kenyon‘s sixth Chronicles of Nick book will be called Defiant, and it won’t be out until April of next year.
  • Moon Shifter #5 from Katie Reus will be called Hunter Reborn, and it is due out next February.
  • The next Kitty Norville book from Carrie Vaughn, Low Midnight, will be out at the end of this year.
  • Fans of Jaye Wells‘ Prospero’s War series will have to wait until next March for the third book, Deadly Spells.
  • Christine Feehan continues her return to super-productivity. She has finished up the next couple Sisters of the Heart books already, and the long-awaited Ghostwalker book, Viper Game. And after that, there will be a new Leopard book due called Cat’s Lair.
  • Jennifer Estep‘s Black Widow will be released November 25th. Hard to believe the Elemental Assassin series is already up to book #12. The blurb is out already…

There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan.

With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bulls-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

  • Sometimes my best guesses just don’t work out. I had assumed that the hero from the Ilona Andrews‘ upcoming Burn for Me would be the fire Prime, Adam Pierce. The blurb proved me wrong, though…

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more
dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

So, that is about that for this week. Any gossip or juicy news to share?

Cover Lover – 4 New Titles

It seems like I am getting covers in groups of four lately, and today is no exception. This first one is from Alexandra Ivy‘s Guardians of Eternity series. Hunt the Darkness will be released on June 3rd.

hunt the darknessNext up is Cassie Alexander‘s Bloodshifted, from her Edie Spence series. It is due out on July 1st.

quicksilver soulI am really looking forward to Hunt the Darkness…I can’t remember the characters names, but in the last book I found the beginning of their story more interesting than the main characters’ was. Any of these looking like something you will be checking out?

New Release Dates…

I have been pretty steadily adding titles to the New Release pages lately, rather than making one monster update every month or so, but this week there were quite a few notable pre-order links that whoed up on Amazon.

  • Sparrow Hill Road, which is the first book of Seanan McGuire‘s upcoming Ghost Stories series, will be released on May 6th.
  • Charlaine Harris will start a new series next year that is a little less supernatural in flavor than Sookie Stackhouse, but still veers towards the paranormal. The new series will be called Midnight, Texas, and the first book will be called Midnight Crossroad. Look for it on May 6th.
  • The 4th book of M.J. Scott‘s Half Light City series, Fire Kin, will be released on May 6th.
  • The next rumored Meredith Gentry book from Laurell K. Hamilton, A Shiver of Light, now has a release date. It is due out on June 3rd.
  • It looks like Jess Haines will be releasing another H&W Investigations book. Enslaved by the Others is due out on July 1st.
  • Ilona Andrews revealed that the cover for Magic Breaks will be made public on October 31st, and now Amazon has the preorder up with the date listed as July 29th.
  • Kat Richardson‘s next Greywalker book, Revenant, will be released on August 5th.
  • Black Ice is the title of the second Mist book from Susan Krinard. It is due out on August 12th.
  • Shield of Winter from Nalini Singh, which will feature Vasic, will be released on June 3rd.
  • August 5th is the release date for Chloe Neill‘s next Chicagoland Vampires book, Blood Games.
  • Fans of Victoria Scott‘s Dante Walker series will be glad to know that book three is in the works. The Warrior is due out on May 6th.
  • The fifth and final book from Jennifer L. Armentrout‘s Lux series, Opposition, will be out on August 5th.
  • The Immortal Crown is the title of Richelle Mead‘s second Age of X book, and it will be released on May 29th.

Which of these are you most excited by? Shield of Winter is at the top of my list, along with Blood Games and Opposition (even though I hate to see the Lux series end). Magic Breaks in hardcover is a huge one for me, and I might even try out Charlaine Harris’ new one, too.

Cover Lover – 13 New Titles

It looks like there was a decent crop of covers released in the last few days, or at least my peek over at Goodreads turned up some I hadn’t seen before. First up is Forged, the fourth book in Jacquelyn Frank‘s World of Nightwalkers series. It is due out on April 29th.

Cover Lover – 5 New Titles

It looks like it is time again for another release-date update. I don’t know why they feel the need to shift book dates around like they do, but there have been quite a few moved back over the last few weeks. I am also working on the recommendation section, and I add one or two every night as they come to me. I will be opening that one up for you to add your own favorites, too. Hopefully that will be done next week.

On the cover side of things, there are five new ones for today. I am a big fan of Jennifer Ashley‘s Shifers Unbound series, and the Feral Heat novella will be released on March 18th.

feral heatThe third book of Lilith Saintcrow‘s Bannon and Clare series will be called The Ripper Affair. Goodreads lists it as an August 2014 release.

half off ragnarokThis next one is from Jaye Wells. Cursed Moon is the second book of her Prospero’s War series.

cursed moonAnd this last one is from a series I have recently dove into (mostly because I loved the covers). Dreams of Gods and Monsters is the third book of Laini Taylor‘s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and it will be released on April 1st.

dreams of gods and monstersI was a bit let down with the Gods and Monsters cover. It isn’t bad, but the first two were real stand outs and I thought they would go all out for the last one. Hopefully it is a “looks better in person” cover.

Cover Lover – 6 New Titles

Let me start today’s little cover post by saying that WordPress is, once again, acting wonky. The comments feature is what seems to be funky – it looks like long-time posters are randomly being put into moderation for comment approval. Sometimes one comment is approved, the next one is moderated, and the third approved. Looks like the powers that be are “upgrading” again (god help us all).

So, I go home from work a few minutes ago and I had not one, not two, but three emails telling me that the cover for Karen Marie Moning‘s next Fever series/Dani O’Malley book, Burned, was out. Thanks all, ’cause I have been looking forward to it. It wasn’t quite what I expected, but then I was thinking of a fiery version of the first cover for Iced, and I sort of had my heart set on that. This isn’t bad, though…

884903_10151370668878034_1348317293_o

And this second one is the paperback version of Christine Feehan‘s Dark Storm. Way, WAY better than the hardcover, if I do say so myself. Not sure about the funky looking little dragon, but at least all of that…that…goldy colored stuff has been scraped off.

dark storm

Now, this third cover was sent to me by Marcia, so many thanks once again. Ritual Magic is from the World of the Lupi series from Eileen Wilks, and it will be released on August 6th. This is another series that has consistently good covers, which just makes some of the awful ones seem unnecessary.

ritual magic

These next two have the same sort of grungy vibe going on. First up is Hellhound, the next book in Nancy Holzner‘s Deadtown series. It will be released on October 29th.

hellhound

And the story of October Daye continues in Seanan McGuire‘s Chimes at Midnight, which will be on the shelves on September 3rd.

Untitled-6

And the final one for today is the lone young adult cover. Eternity is book three in Elizabeth Miles‘ Fury trilogy, and it will be released on September 3rd.
