The Lunar Chronicles…Book Five!?!

For those of us who are fans of young adult, this is quite a big surprise. Marissa Meyer has just announced that there will be a fifth book in her terrific Lunar Chronicles series, a prequel called Fairest. Surprisingly, it is the story of the evil Queen Levana, and set about 20 years before the events of Cinder. I was totally in the dark about this one, although it does explain why Winter was pushed back until next November. Apparently, the events in Fairest tie in closely with that final Lunar Chronicles story, and we only have to wait until January 27th for this bonus book!

According to Meyer:

“I did a lot with mirrors and played with that element,” Meyer says. “That concept of what could make a woman so vain that she would commit unspeakable evil to remain the most beautiful woman in her country?”

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

Yes? No? I find this really interesting. I figure there can’t possibly be a Happily ever after for this one, since she is the whack-job big bad from the main series, but I am looking forward to seeing how she got to be that way.

I was so confused when this news first broke. I thought it was a novella at first, but nope, we get a whole other book. I’m also super impressed that they kept it a secret for so long.
