Cover Lover – Dead Ice (The Zombie Porn Book)

Sooo, there is another Anita Blake book from Laurell K. Hamilton in the works, this one called Dead Ice. It is due out on June second, and the cover and blurb were recently released. And what a blurb it is. Zombie porn. Wait, zombie porn? Seriously? Pretty cover, though…

dead iceAnita Blake has the highest kill count of any vampire executioner in the country. She’s a U.S. Marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. But ever since she and master vampire Jean-Claude went public with their engagement, all she is to anyone and everyone is Jean-Claude’s fiancée.

It’s wreaking havoc with her reputation as a hard ass—to some extent. Luckily, in professional circles, she’s still the go-to expert for zombie issues. And right now, the FBI is having one hell of a zombie issue.

Someone is producing zombie porn. Anita has seen her share of freaky undead fetishes, so this shouldn’t bother her. But the women being victimized aren’t just mindless, rotting corpses. Their souls are trapped behind their eyes, signaling voodoo of the blackest kind.

It’s the sort of case that can leave a mark on a person. And Anita’s own soul may not survive unscathed . . .

Now I am talking as one who has never read a Laurell K. Hamilton book, mostly because I was repeatedly warned off of them. What I have commonly heard was that the first books were really good, then it sort of spiraled off into all-sex-no-story territory. The write up for this one doesn’t tempt me to start, either. What is your take? Has the series gone off the rails for you, and if it has do you think you would ever pick it back up again? Are there any other series whose storyline direction has stopped you from being a fan?

I read the first 20 Anita Blake books and I still think the first 7-8 books are among the best urban fantasy EVER (even though they’re from the 90s). Totally worth reading up to maybe book 10.

Once the overall series plot started to crawl and the books were filled with over analyzing sex and whether or not she was a slut, they got boring. I mean, the long orgy sex scenes were even boring.

But zombie porn? I might have to check that out. Reminds me a little of the movie Deadgirl.

  2. snapdragon says:

I have read the series and April is correct the first books including “Obsidian Butterfly” are wonderful. Than it just got too much into the sex thing. “Affliction” released earlier this year is much closer to the beginning of the series than she has done in a looonng time. So I will check out “Dead Ice” from the library and enjoy it that way.

I hated to give it up, I hung in for 13 books before I realized the series I fell in love with had been dead for several books. I would still recommend anyone to read the first 5-7 books as great entertainment, but it truly died and just became literary porn.

  4. Monika says:

Love the cover, but tempted to say that at least the porn part in zombie porn is not really news in this series. I also loved the first few instalments up to Obsidian Butterfly where the whole ardeur thingy started to get out of hand and Anita was having sex all the time to satisfy it. Also, it was not only the sex I hated, but the whole double standard where it seemed Anita was having sex with everybody – often simultaneously – wheras her partners were only allowed to have sex with her. It seemed liked Hamilton was writing too much of her innermost egolomaniac sexual fantasies of satisfying multiple lovers into Anita (and the same is true for Meredith, too, sadly).

I ABSOLUETLY LOVED the Anita Blake series – the first 5 / 6 books….. Then It went down hill from there. I still read all her books, but I think she should cut back on the sex a bit… and have more of the fun, crazy, psycho Anita back… But this books does look good, but really ? Zombie Porn? more of the sex again! gahhh!
One of the her books, I swear the WHOLE book was just sex, and had two chapters on her FBI work…..

I will get them from the library now… gave up on wasting my money being mad about the plot. I think it is like watching a slow motion action scene, you see it coming but can’t resist watching to see how it ends. I thought Affliction was one of her better books, more like the first 9 books in series, but her last book in the Mercy series made me crazy… the last two chapters were the only ones that advanced the plot and she killed off a main character that made no sense.
She has a new novella out now called Jason and the reviews warn you it is nothing but a book about sex and multiple partner sex. sigh. not reading that one.
I have a few series that I got into and lasted about four books and gave up.
Fairly new authors that just took the story off in a total different direction than what the series premise started with.

    • Ginny says:

Yes Jason has sex in it and with two boys and two girls but it is not all about the sex. Both Jason and Anita are trying to learn how to have better relationships with their loved ones. So read the book and decide for your self.

  7. Charry says:

I’m so glad you brought this up. Like most people I loved the first books in the series and then dropped out as the series went to crazy town. Lately however I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to jump back in. The series is still going strong apparently. Did it get better?

    • Ravi says:

I’m afraid the series hasn’t gotten better and sales have continued to decline. The most recent novel, Jason, was released straight to paperback. It was nothing more than poorly written sex. For example-

“When Jason is with Anita, he adds in some bites, increasing in intensity, until finally he is biting her “sweet spot in the center” and shaking her like “like a dog with a toy.” Anita screams her o, and he backs off.”

      • Ginny says:

If all you look for is the sex you are missing the point of the book. Jason is trying to have a better relationship with J.J. and Anita is trying to have a better relationship with jade. So read the book again and don’t look at just the sex.

  8. battleborn82 says:

I completely agree with the whole Anita Blake analysis. I loved the first books then I just was so tired of reading over detailed descriptions of what characters look like in almost every chapter…And I agree with Monika the double standards are over the top. The thing that just baffles me though, and excuse my crudeness, is the fact that Anita has the most magical vagina in all the land, everyone wants to stop by for its healing powers !! Every man or woman she meets wants her oh and the men are just enormously endowed…EVERY LAST GUY ! The fact that the story is just gone sucks because I loved her solving crimes being all bad ass US Marshall. I’ll get it from the library( I must enjoy torture) and I swear if she does a zombie im done for good.

    • dougmeeks says:

I always thought it was kinda creepy the way she had pictures of herself dressed like Anita on the book sleeves (I bought them in hardback or paperback way back then ) 🙂

  9. Muhammad Adnan Ria says:

so its not me alone who is disappointed. Books 1-12 are awesome. They get you involved emotionally with Anita regards he relationship struggle with Richard and the master vampire. Plus the story makes sense. Then it gets all sex sex sex..1 para story… Sex sex sex and so on. Even the way she killed the most power vamps was just so stupid. The only reason i may read this book is because of the expectation that Hamilton might have realized her mistake. Its just like going to place to get your favorite dish. First few times you are served with excellent quality and then it gets all messed up. You still keep going due to hope that someday you might get that quality again

I love this seris. To me the stories just get better and better. Yes there is sex but the story it’s self is good too. My librarian got me hooked on this series and I have gotten others hooked on it to. If it was a bad series then no one would want to read it.if you have never read it try it if you don’t like it fine. But Don’t put the series down if you have never read it.

    • kaleigha says:

Huh…really? I didn’t put it down, actually. I said what I have been told by several fans, also which has been stated by several commenters before you. I also stated that the write up for this book doesn’t grab my attention. My opinion, which I am both allowed to have and to express. I give the cover and series the same amount of exposure as I do other series, so no bias. And the zombie porn thing is right in the blurb. You like it? Great. Some do, some don’t. Don’t jump on those who don’t – it is a personal call.

      • Ginny says:

I am not jumping on anyone. The zombie porn in the book is just anita’ s case for the book. It tells more about her relationship with everybody and how her powers have grown more than anything else. To me the book was a good read. Try to read it and see what you think. That is all I ask.

        • kaleigha says:

Hey Ginny. I am a bit…picky, I guess, when it comes to storylines, and for me a big deal breaker is having more than one romantic partner (or mates, anything along that line). For me, I am trying to chug through the Jane Yellowrock books, but even there the lack of one, solid relationship makes it really, really hard for me to get invested in the story. It is my thing, I guess.
