Kate Daniels World Character Guide

Long ago, the world was built on magic, but the advancements of mankind swayed the balance to technology and magic went dormant. Centuries passed, with the creatures of magic considered little more than myths and fairy tales. And then, 30 years ago, the world changed back. With this second shift, tech fell in spectacular fashion…skyscrapers collapsed, planes fell from the sky…and beings of unbelievable powers rose once again. Shapeshifters, vampires, mages and warlords are the new normal in the early years of 2040, and things are just starting to get interesting. This is a quick breakdown of some of the major players in Kate Daniels’ world.

– Shapeshifters –

Consisting of 32 species divided into 7 Clans, those afflicted with the Lyc-V (Lycos) virus have the ability to change into an animal form, with incredible strength, speed, and heightened senses. But the price they pay is steep. No shapeshifter can afford to lose control, not even for an instant. They are at constant war with themselves, their animal instincts demanding they slaughter without discrimination, and their minds in constant battle against the bloodlust. Those who find control live within a highly disciplined and structured pack, but those who do not inevitably go loup and become the most vicious form of killers, stopped only with their own death. Their passion and power make them the natural rivals of The People.

Barabas Gilliam – Weremongoose. Former Pack lawyer and adviser of Kate Daniels. Separated from the Pack with Curran Lennart and Kate Daniels. Part owner of the Mercenary Guild. Engaged to Christopher.

Conlan Lennart – infant lion shapeshifter born with the Shinar blood. Completely unique, has a vast store of magic. Son of Kate Daniels and Curran Lennart. Grandson of Roland.

Curran Lennart – Rare gray lion shapeshifter. Former Beast Lord. New leader of the Mercenary Guild. Mate of Kate Daniels. Father of Conlan Lennart.

– Clan Bouda –

Although their clan has only around 30 numbers, the werehyenas (or Boudas) are a powerful presence in the Pack. Matriarchal in nature, the Boudas are passionate, vicious fighters who hold a grudge, and even the other Clans are wary of taking them on. They have a long-standing mutual hatred with Clan Wolf, and although they are much fewer in number, they make up for it in cunning.

Andrea Nash – Beastkin. Clan Bouda Beta turned Alpha. Former Knight of the Order. Mate of Raphael Medrano.

Ascanio Ferera – spent years working for Kate Daniels at Cutting Edge Investigations. Craves power and position within the Bouda clan. Future Alpha.

– Clan Heavy –

Consisting of werebears, weremoose, and wereboars among others, the Shifters of this clan have large beast forms. When brute force is needed, Clan Heavy is the answer. Incredibly strong, one werebear or werebison can have the same impact as a tank.

– Clan Jackal –

The quietest of the seven Clans is the Jackals. While all Shapeshifters are highly dangerous, the Jackals are known for their cunning. Peaceful and family-oriented, the Jackals share much in common with the Boudas, and have a natural rivalry with Clan Wolf.

Members of Clan Jackal: Brandy Kerry, Chandra, Colin Mather (Alpha), Geraldine Mather (Alpha Female), Karen Iverson, Janice, Michelle, Tamara

– Clan Nimble –

The shapeshifters of Clan Nimble are somewhat of an anomaly, often valuing wisdom and experience over brute force. The clan itself consists of those Shifters who have smaller beast forms, including weremink and werefox, among others.

Members of Clan Nimble: Dingo (weredingo/deceased), Joshua (werecoyote), Myong Williams (weremink)

– Clan Rat –

The Rats believe in the status quo, and they usually only attack if they are sure they can win. Not big on trusting outsiders, they usually take the role of spy or assassin.

Thomas Lonesco – Mate of Alpha Robert Lonesco. Considered Beta male.

Other members of Clan Rat: Carlos (scout), Jardin (scout), Kasen, Larissa, Mila, Paola, Seraphine, Zachary Stone (former Alpha/deceased)

– Clan Wolf –

The Wolves are the largest clan in the Pack, and often take the lead in battle. With their greater numbers also comes the greater hardship, since more of their children turn Loup than all of the other clans. They are usually intensely loyal, highly disciplined, and have near-perfect memories.

Daniel – former Wolf Alpha. Mate of Jennifer Hinton. Killed in the battle with the Lighthouse Keepers.

Desandra Kral – daughter of Obluda Alpha Jarek Kral. Forced by her father to marry twice. Has two children. Relocates to Atlanta and defeats Jennifer Hinton for the position of Wolf Alpha.

– The Iron Dogs –

Roland has, during his long life, had two Warlords who were blood bonded to him – controlled to the extent that even the thought of disagreeing with one of Roland’s directives was almost unheard of. The first was Voron, and the second was Hugh d’Ambray. Hugh built a cohesive and highly trained military force – soldiers without equal. And as Roland found after he purged Hugh d’Ambray, they are completely loyal…to Hugh. After a brutal culling at the direction of Landon Nez, the few remaining Dogs have found a new home in Berry Hill, Kentucky, with a mysterious group known as The Departed.

Bale – Leader of one of the four Cohorts. A Berserker who is quick to violence. Possesses a battle warp during combat.

– The People –

Proficient in both magic and technology, The People are in fact Necromancers who pilot and control Vampires. Both powerful and dangerous, The People are wealth-oriented and prize power above all else. Unemotional and cold, they are the rivals of the Shapeshifters. 1. Rachel Henri says:

Hey where is elara harper from the iron Covenant series I know Hugh’s there cuz I’ve seen him and it because he shows up prior to the iron Covenant series and what about the other iron dogs but what about Alora Harper I know she has a very prominent role within the iron Covenant series you didn’t bother to put her character profile in it you need to fix that

    • kaleigha says:

Hey there if you take a look under the heading that says character guide it says this is a breakdown of all the characters in Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series complete up to Magic Binds so it means that I haven’t gotten to Iron and Magic yet but it is high up on my list to get to so that means that I will have a whole bunch of new characters to add including Elara Harper and it will all be fixed so actually it isn’t that I didn’t bother it is that I haven’t gotten to it yet

    • kaleigha says:

No problem. I am so looking forward to the re-read of Iron and Magic. I went through it so fast the first time that I know I will get more out of it the second time around.

    • kaleigha says:

I did ask belated permission back when I first started it up, and they were great about it. I usually try and do the “hope this is ok?” thing for them all, just in case.

  2. Dianna Haught says:

I’m trying to put Hugh and Kate together in the timeline. How old is Hugh? I can’t see how Voron could have trained Hugh and then left Roland right after Kate was born if she was born 5 years after magic came back. (In the first book she’s 25 and magic has only come back for 30 years.)

    • kaleigha says:

Hm, I don’t really know. I had figured that Hugh would be around 50 or 60 for some reason, but I think at one point even Hugh wondered how old he is himself.

  3. Jay says:

I’m not an expert. I’ve read the books very spread out over time but it wasn’t impression, especially after reading iron and Magic that Hugh was hundred of years old. I guess I’m wrong???

    • kaleigha says:

I kind of got that impression during the Kate Daniels books, but if I recall correctly during Iron and Magic it was something like Hugh had been found 60 years ago by Roland. I think.
