– Vampires –

Cain was made into the first vampire by God for killing his brother, Abel, and his curse for spilling blood was to be forever forced to drink it. Those that followed were called vampires. Possessing incredible strength, speed, enhanced senses and the ability to compel humans, they have few weaknesses and almost endless lives. While more powerful at night, they have no aversion to sunlight, crosses, holy water or wooden stakes, but they will die the true-death from decapitation or being staked in the heart with silver. Each line is ranked by the strength of its Master, and every person the Master sires is under their rule.

– Ghosts –

Most ghosts are like replays of their former selves, stuck on an unending loop. Some, though, have part of their consciousness stay on the earthly plane. Because they are so often ignored and overlooked by other supernaturals, they are perfect for intelligence gathering and surveillance. Some ghosts possess more power than others, and over time they develop the ability to manifest a physical form for limited periods of time.

Fabian du Brac – died in 1922 at the age of 45. Desperately lonely for years, taken in by Cat Crawfield. Used for surveillance work. Boyfriend of Elisabeth.

Other Ghosts: Beth-Ann, Elisabeth, Heinrich Kramer, Herbert, John Simms, Winston Gallagher

– Ghouls –

As undead sister-races, vampires and ghouls are both powerful and resilient. Ghouls are sired from receiving the heart of another ghoul and raised by the blood of a vampire. When they awaken, they do so with a blinding hunger for human flesh. Because they have fewer a similar level of power and fewer weaknesses than vampires (sunlight, silver), and can only be killed by decapitation, there are some among their numbers who believe that ghouls should play by their own set of rules.

Marie Laveau – also known as Majestic. The voodoo queen of New Orleans. Died in 1881, raised from the blood of Gregor. One of the most powerful ghouls in the nation. Master of grave magic.

Rodney – found as a child by Bones, starving on the streets of Poland. Raised by Bones over 150 years ago. Had a relationship with Justina Crawfield, killed by Gregor during her rescue.

Other Ghouls: Apollyon (deceased), Barnabus (deceased), Brent, Canelle (Gregor; deceased), Delphine LaLaurie (deceased), Dermot, Grendel (Ian; deceased), Jacques, Jelani (deceased), Liza (Bones), Louis LaLaurie, Dr. (deceased), Magnus (deceased), Scythe, Simon, Stakes (deceased), Verses

– Demons –

Creatures of incredible power, demons feed on the lesser emotions of rage, hatred and jealousy. They have walked the earth since before the time of vampire or ghouls, and are the originators of magic. Possessing a human, they drain everything they can out of their victim before they move on to their next unsuspecting host. By branding their prey, demons impart some of their essence – and their strengths and weakness. Corporeal demons can be injured by salt, and are unable to move around in daylight, while those they possess or brand have no such limitations.

Denise MacGregor – best friend of Cat Crawfield. First husband Randy MacGregor killed by the zombies raised by the vampire Patra. Suffered from PTSD, cut herself off from the paranormal world until she was branded by the demon Raum. Has the ability to shapeshift, and can only be killed by a demon bone through the eye. Wife of Spade. Story told in First Drop of Crimson.

Other Demons/demon branded: Ashael, Balchezek, Dagon, Ereshki (demon branded), Fenkir (deceased), Nathanial (demon branded), Hazael, Rani (deceased), Raum, Richard Trove, Xaphan (deceased)

– Hybrids/Others –

As with the human race, not every being neatly fits into one category or another. Several vampires have profound magical ability, or have from their human side something that qualifies them as “other”.

Katie – the only known human/vampire/ghoul hybrid. Created in the labs run by Jason Madigan from the egg of Cat Crawfield. Claimed by Bones as his daughter. Military trained since birth, raised to be a killing machine. Believed dead after being placed under a death sentence by both Law Guardians and ghouls. Living in hiding with Cat Crawfield, Bones, Justina Crawfield and Tate Bradley.

Leila Dalton Dracul – Trueborn Witch/Vampire hybrid. Former Olympic gymnast hopeful turned carnival acrobat. Parter of the vampire Marty. Left changed after touching a downed power-line at 13. Able to channel electricity through her right hand, reads the worst sin of anyone she touches. Gets images of the past, present and future, and able to track people by the essence they leave behind on objects. Sired by, and married to, Vlad Tepesh.

Veritas – half vampire, half demigod or nephilim. Daughter of Aken the Warden, God of the underworld. One of the most powerful Trueborn witches of all time. Birth name unknown, given the name Ariel by Tenoch after he rescued her from the demon Dagon. Glamoured her true form, took the name Veritas, and became a Law Guardian. Often works against the rules of the Guardians to help the innocent. Wife of Ian Flannery. Story told in the Night Rebel series.

Other Hybrids: Gretchen Dalton (Trueborn Ani-Kutani Witch/Vampire), Joan of Arc (original human/vampire hybrid; deceased), Leotie Shayne (Trueborn Ani-Kutani Witch/Vampire), Mircea (Vampire/Necromancer; sired by Mihaly Szilagyi), Neryre (Vampire/Necromancer)

– Paranormal Behavior Unit –

Pulled from all of the branches of the military and US government and law enforcement, the Paranormal Behavior Division Unit is a secret branch of Homeland Security. They are responsible for investigating and containing supernatural threats to the public. Their greatest triumph was the recruitment of the half vampire, half human Cat Crawfield, known as The Red Reaper. Before her retirement, she lead a crack team of agents that ended up with a personal stake in the supernatural world. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

Cooper – former undercover narcotics officer. Held at Jason Madigan‘s facility, experimented on and nearly killed. Turned vampire to save his life, sired by Bones.

Dave – former fireman with an extensive military background. Killed in action by a vampire. Brought back as a ghoul. Sired by Rodney, raised by Bones.
