Dianne Duvall and Random Stuff

I am officially on my fall vacation, which doesn’t suck. I use it and my January vacation to do the things I was too lazy to do all year, like major cleaning. That does sort-of suck. One thing I do is tackle my dust-and-cat-hair filled books, and I usually take that opportunity to take stock and see if there are any TBR books that I have lost interest in. After many, many purges and concentrated effort to read off of my shelves, over the last couple of years I have managed to drop over 200 books off of mount TBR. Now I am pretty much down to the basics.

One of the series that has always escaped the chopping block is Dianne Duvall‘s Immortal Guardians. I don’t hear much mentioned about it, so I thought I would ask all of you…are you fans? How much did you like this series? Is it worthwhile for the TBR-sometime soonish shelf?

And on a related note as to my paring things down, I was wondering how much any of you use the author pages sections? Other than the ones that have character guides, they don’t provide anything you can’t get on Goodreads except for the fact that covers and blurbs for each series are all on the same page. I find myself using them less and less, and I am toying with the thought of just keeping the guides and moving them like I recently did for The Midnight Breed guide. Let me know if you have an opinion one way or the other. Not sure if I am getting lazier, or maybe just trying to be smarter with my time, but I am all about not having extra “stuff” lately. Physical stuff, online stuff, you name it, I have been getting rid of a lot of clutter. Not always easy to do, but it always feels so good afterwards.

Cover Lover – 7 New Titles

For the first time in quite a while, this cover lover post has absolutely no young adult books. Let’s start with a much-hyped new series from Amanda Bouchet. Breath of Fire is the second book in the Kingmaker Chronicles, and it has a release date of January 3rd.

breath of fireSHE’S DESTINED TO DESTROY THE WORLD…

BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT
Griffin knows Cat is destined to change the world-for the better. As the realms are descending into all-out war, Cat and Griffin must embrace their fate together. Gods willing, they will emerge side-by-side in the heart of their future kingdom…or not at all.

Laurell K. Hamilton‘s next Anita Blake book will is called Crimson Death, and it will be out on October 11th.

crimson deathNow, in her twenty-fifth adventure, vampire hunter and zombie raiser Anita Blake learns how far she’ll go to save someone she loves…

M’Lady, Moroven, Nemhain…under every name she brings terror and destruction. But Anita brings her own weapon to the party: Edward, the man known as Death itself…

This next one is from Kathy Lyons. The Bear Who Loved Me is from her Grizzlies Gone Wild series, and it has a release date of September 6th.

the bear who loved meWHEN AN ALPHA MEETS HIS MATCH . . .

Local legends are true: bear shifters exist . . . and her nephew is part of their clan. As is Carl Carman, the sexy, larger-than-life man who has sworn to find her nephew-and the other young shifters who’ve gone missing.

As the leader of his clan, Carl is surrounded by enemies. He’s learned the hard way that keeping a firm leash on his inner beast is key to survival, though his feelings for Becca test his legendary control. Then danger stalks too close, and Carl realizes he must unleash the raging, primal force within to protect everything he holds dear. But can Becca trust his grizzly side with her life-and her heart?

Suzanne Wright‘s new one will be called Force of Temptation, which is the second book from her Mercury Pack series. It will be out on December 13th.

force of temptationHarley Vincent is resigned to life in the human world. Sure, being a margay shifter is half her nature, but life among humans gives her the freedom to roam and do as she pleases. That is, until anti-shifter extremists target her, putting her life in immediate danger.

When an old acquaintance and onetime fling, Jesse Dalton, shows up to offer the protection of his pack, Harley hesitates. She may have feelings for Jesse that go beyond their one-night stand, but life among shifters means giving over her independence to the needs of pack. Plus Mercury Pack has its own threat to face: a rich half-shifter is determined to claim their territory at any cost.

Jesse, who lost his true mate as a child, has wanted Harley since their night together, and he’s not letting her go again. They may not be destined for each other, but he knows she belongs to him and with his pack. Even if he can convince her to join him now, can he convince her to stay?

How to Tame a Beast in Seven Days is an upcoming release from Kerrelyn Sparks. It is the first book of her new The Embraced series, and it will be out on March 7th.

how to tame a beast in seven daysLuciana grew up on the Isle of Moon, hidden away because of her magical powers. But when her father arrives, he offers her a choice: remain on the island or return with him and marry the Beast of Benwick in order to save their legacy—and her father’s life.

Lord Leofric, the Beast of Benwick, has not been touched since he was a child. Born with the power to harness lightning, he is a danger to everyone he touches. When he meets his betrothed, he expects a loveless, lonely marriage…until he discovers she’s vastly more powerful than he realized. But is she strong enough to withstand his touch?

If they can survive, their love will alter the future of the kingdom. But will their extraordinary powers cost them everything?

Carrie Ann Ryan continues her Talon Pack series with the release of Wolf Betrayed, which is due out on October 11th.

wolf betrayedCharlotte Jamenson was born to the Pack that threatened the world, but grew up in the one that saved it. She’s spent her entire life repenting for lies and faults that were never hers to bear. When she falls for her best friend, Bram Devlin, she thinks she’s finally found forgiveness for the blood in her veins; only a mating bond never came.

Bram knows there’s something missing within his mating with Charlotte, but there’s nothing he can do about it. Their Pack is in danger, and it’s his duty to protect their Alpha—even if it means sacrificing his life. When he’s put in charge of protecting a new member of the Talon Pack, he realizes he and Charlotte may just have a chance at something more than heartache.

Shane Bruins sacrificed his life and his future to protect the Packs from the men he worked for. Now, thanks to circumstances beyond his control, he’s not quite who he was before, and his life is on the line yet again. Only this time, he isn’t alone, and the two wolves in his path might be the only things that can calm the beast inside.

The war isn’t coming, it’s here, and the Talon Pack will have to rely on three souls who know they aren’t what each other wants—but exactly what they need—to win.

And wrapping things for today is Rendezvous With Yesterday, the second book from Dianne Duvall‘s The Gifted One’s series. It will be released on October 17th.

rendevous with yesterdayModern-day bounty hunter Bethany Bennett helps her brother track two fugitives to a forest outside of Houston, Texas. But what should have been a routine apprehension of two bail skippers spirals out of control and ends in violence. After Beth and her brother are both seriously injured, a mysterious figure suddenly looms over her. And, when the smoke clears, Beth finds herself not only in another place, but in another time.

As Lord Robert, Earl of Fosterly, attempts to identify and track down the nameless enemy who has been plaguing his lands and people with violence, the most peculiar woman stumbles into his path. Small, vulnerable, yet possessed of a bold, fiery spirit and wicked sense of humor, she persists in dubbing Robert and his men members of something called a medieval reenactment group . . . until she sees his castle and labels herself mad. It seems bounty hunter Bethany Bennett has come to him from the future, bringing with her laughter and chaos, swiftly winning the hearts of his people and inspiring within him a love he thought he would never experience again. But when Robert discovers a way for her to return to her time, will the love they share be enough to keep them together?

Are you planning on picking up any of these? I have Amanda Bouchet on my TBR soonish pile, but surprisingly I am most looking forward to How To Tame a Beast in Seven Days. It will be a chance for me to try out Kerrelyn Sparks without having to pick up a series that already has a ton of books. Less pressure that way.

Dianne Duvall‘s newbie is an e-book release called A Sorceress of His Own. It is the first book of the Gifted Ones series.

a sorceress of his ownSynopsis…

Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.

For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon’s side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed–or cursed–with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father.

All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon’s life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything–even the wrath of his king–to be with her.

For some reason, I had thought I had heard that Jessica Sims had wrapped up her Midnight Liaisons series, but Goodreads is listing Between a Vamp and a Hard Place as a new one. The blurb doesn’t read like it is part of the series, but what do I know? Either way, it will be released on August 25th.

between a vamp and a hard placeIn the wickedly funny spirit of bestselling authors Kerrelyn Sparks and Molly Harper, this sexy paranormal romance features an estate broker and a 600-year-old vampire out for revenge.

Cover Lover – 3 New Titles

I have gotten all of the new release pages updated to include the most recent cover art and blurbs, but of course in the process I noticed that yes – there seems to have been a bunch of release date shifts and push backs. Again. Sooo, looks like it is time to do a double check, and hopefully that will be done in the next couple of days. I mean, really, what is the point of setting a release date and then shifting it around by a week or two? That is just annoying.

Rant over. There are three covers for today’s post, and this first one is from the second book in the new Robin D. Owens series, Ghost Seer. Ghost Layer is due out on the popular September 2nd.

Reading Roundup…

Once again, time has slipped away from me, and it has been over two months since I have done a reading roundup post. I guess I will do a random selection of what best sticks out in my mind about what I have read.

Everneath_coverEverneathBrodi Ashton‘s debut book had sat on the TBR pile for quite a while. I was suckered in by the pretty cover, but didn’t expect much from the book after I had been through a string of sub-par YA debut novels. Turns out I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I liked that it was a little different than the usual vamps/weres/dystopian YA fare, since it is somewhat of a retelling of the Greek myth about Hades and Persephone. It was something I hadn’t come across before, so for me it seemed like a fresh idea (but in fact there were a few other retellings done last year by other authors). This didn’t move to the top of my favorites pile or anything, but I definitely liked it enough to order the second book.

predatoryPredatory – This anthology featured stories from Alexandra Ivy, Nina Bangs, Dianne Duvall and Hannah Jayne, but I only read the Alexandra Ivy novella. This short story, called Out of Control, serves as the introduction to her new The Sentinels series. Stepping away from her Guardians of Eternity stories, The Sentinels are warriors who guard – and sometimes hunt – those beings of great power. This was fast paced and interesting, and made me look even more forward to the upcoming first book, Born in Blood, which will be released on December 31st. I do actually plan on going back to read the other novellas in this anthology, since all of them sounded interesting. Speaking of Born in Blood, I will be doing a spotlight post on that upcoming book as my next post, since both the cover and blurb have recently been made public.

edge of dawnEdge of Dawn – I have bored everyone before with my unique relationship with Lara Adrian‘s books. I pretty much always enjoy them when I am reading them, but for some reason they don’t stick with me (with the exception of Darker After Midnight, which definitely stayed with me). I was pretty hyped to get into Edge of Dawn and see the “new” Midnight Breed world…but I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it was me, but I kept putting the book down and reading something else shiny that caught my eye. I know it was Lara Adrian’s usual well written and well thought out story, but my attention just kept drifting away. I think all told it took me over two weeks to finish, which doesn’t happen often. The good thing is that some of the new characters did get my notice, and I am still looking forward to their stories.

the sweetest darkThe Sweetest Dark – Talk about a surprise. I actually fought with myself to buy this one. My experience with Shana Abe is at the extreme end of the hit-or-miss spectrum. I go from loving one book, to being bored by the next, to disliking the next and enjoying the next. I figured that since my history was so spotty with her Drakon series, I would maybe just cut my losses and not bother with her YA spin-off series featuring new character Lora Jones. But…but…then my series would not be complete?!? That cannot be allowed – ever. Grudgingly, I ordered The Sweetest Dark…and I was hooked. Completely original, great story, great setting, beautifully written with characters I really enjoyed – and an ending that totally surprised me. I mean, I just didn’t see that coming, at all. This is in my top three favorite YA book so far this year, and I cannot wait to get my grubby hands on The Deepest Night when it is released on August 13th.

I am going to do up a reading round-up post next week to cover a few more of what I read this past couple of months. How about you? What did you read and love recently (or not love so much, for that matter)? Anything stand out for you?

Cover Lover – 3 New Titles

Just a quick drive-by post to up a few covers I found over on Goodreads. Two have a “purple darkness” theme going on, and one is a re-vamp (uh, no pun intended). Dianne Duvall‘s next Immortal Guardians book, Darkness Rises, will be released on October 1st. I have heard such good things about this series, and yes, it is still on Mount TBR. One day…

darkness rises

And this next one is from Keri Arthur. The second book of her re-released Nikki and Michael series, Hearts in Darkness, will be coming out on August 27th.

And finally, this e-book from Cynthia Eden is actually a re-release of the story she contributed to the Entangled anthology. Her contribution was called A Bit of Bite, and the stand-alone re-release will be available for no charge very shortly. Amazon isn’t showing a listing for it as yet, but apparently it will be up very soon.

a bit of bite

I am actually kind of liking the purple thing going on – a little different, anyways. Hard color to pull off with a guy on the front, though. Any of these you are waiting for?
